“What do you want to do after school?” It sounds like a simple question. Until someone asks you.

Maybe you’ve got a few ideas, but none feels quite right. Maybe your friends seem to have a plan, and you’re still trying to work out where to start.

Or maybe you know what you enjoy. You just can’t see how it could turn into something you’d want to do for a living. Week by Week helps you make those connections.

It’s an app with an AI coach that starts with your life: what interests you, what matters to you, and the things you already do. You can type or talk.

Take your time. Skip a question if you want. You might talk about helping Dad paint the garage, getting younger players ready for a game, or sorting out a problem during your shift.

Then the AI coach helps you look a little closer. What did you actually do? Which part did you enjoy?

What made you want to help? Perhaps you liked figuring something out. Explaining it so someone understood.

Or getting everyone organised when things were a bit chaotic. Those details can reveal strengths you haven’t thought much about. And you’ve got your own experiences to back them up.

From there, Week by Week suggests career paths based on your interests, your strengths and what you want from working life. You can explore why a path might suit you, what the work involves, and ways to get started where you live.

That could mean an apprenticeship, training, university or going straight into work. Some suggestions might make sense straight away. Others might surprise you.

You decide which ones are worth a closer look. If something doesn’t sound like you, you can say so. Then you choose one small step for the week.

Ask someone what their job is really like. Look into a course. Find out about a chance to try something yourself.

You’re giving yourself something real to go on. And as life happens, you bring those experiences back into the app. A project you enjoyed.

A challenge you got through. Something you tried and realised you wouldn’t want to do every day. Add what happened and what you did.

The AI coach helps you recognise what you’re learning, builds on your skills and uses those new details to inform its suggestions. You can revisit your paths and ask for fresh ideas as you go.

Over time, you build a clearer picture of yourself: what you’re good at, what you care about, and what you’d like to get better at. Your plans can develop with that picture.

If exams take over or you have a rough week, you can choose a smaller step. If your interests change, you can explore another direction. What you’ve already done still counts.

When you’re ready to apply for work, those experiences can help you build a CV. They can also give you something concrete to talk through with your careers adviser or an adult you trust. You join with a nickname.

It’s free for you when your school uses it. You don’t need a perfect answer to “What’s next?” You can start with something you’re curious about, discover what it tells you, and build from there.

Sound familiar?

You're not behind. You just haven't had the right conversation yet.

“Everyone else seems to have a plan.”

Most don't – they're just louder about it. Week by Week starts with where you actually are.

“I'm good at stuff. Just not school stuff.”

Fixing cars, running the group chat, looking after your little brother – that all counts. We help you turn it into skills employers look for.

“Uni? Trades? Work? Where do I even start?”

You get career paths that fit you, each with a first step you can take where you live.

“Will a robot do this job in five years?”

Nobody knows for sure. Every path explains how AI may change the work – with reasons, not a score – so you can weigh it up.

Real talk

The job world is changing fast. Nobody handed you a map.

The world

AI is changing the game.

Some jobs are disappearing, new ones keep popping up, and the way you get hired is changing too. Even people with years of experience are still working it out.

Real life

You find it by trying.

What you're into shows up when you try real stuff – a part-time job, a taster day, a chat with someone who actually does the job.

Our answer

One week at a time.

Planning your whole life at 16? Nah. You get one doable move each week – and you always see where it leads. And with Connect, you can find people at your school who are into the same things.

How it works

Your journey: interests, skills, job, career.

From what you're into towards a career you want. First you work out a direction. Then every win updates your skills and paths – and can suggest a next step. You decide.

  1. Stage 1

    Interests

A short first part – about 10 minutes. The AI coach learns what you enjoy and what matters to you. Go deeper later, when it helps.

  2. Stage 2

    Skills

Add a win in a sentence. The AI coach suggests skills it could show and where they might help at work. Check them and change anything that isn't accurate.

  3. Stage 3

    Job

Career paths that fit you, and any current job ads near you. Wins move the best fits up. Want fresh ideas? Tap “Refresh paths”.

  4. Stage 4

    Career

Every path is a ladder to a real career – getting really good at it or leading a team. Want your own business one day? Your paths show that route too.

I'm Anna. I'm sixteen, and I'm from Nelson. My story is made up, but the app you'll see is real. Everyone keeps asking me what I want to do after school. I always say, “Something with people, I guess.” Translation: no idea. What I don't mention is that I've been helping Nana every Wednesday for two years. Mostly cleaning her kitchen and keeping her company.

Last winter, I noticed she kept forgetting to drink. So I put a jug of water on her table. We started marking a little tick for every glass. She grumbled. Now she tries to beat her own score. Then our school started using Week by Week, an app with an AI coach. I thought it would tell me what job to do. It asked me about the things I already did. Like helping Nana. What did I actually enjoy about it? I hadn't really thought about that.

“I like noticing what would help,” I said. “And then doing something about it.” I'd never put it like that before. I told it about tennis, helping Nana, and a science result I was proud of. They showed up as little wins in the app. Then it helped me see the skills behind those things. Being reliable. Noticing when someone needs help. Sticking with something. And each skill had an example from my own life.

I'd never thought I had much to put on a CV. Turns out I had somewhere to start. Next morning on the bus, I looked at my career suggestions. Nursing was one of the options. The app showed how it connected with the things I'd told it, and what the training would involve. I'd never really pictured myself as a nurse. Now I wanted to find out more.

My first step was to compare two nursing courses and check their entry requirements. Chemistry and I aren't exactly friends. So I wrote down a question for our careers adviser. “Which subjects would keep nursing open for me?” The next Sunday, my cousins and I made a roster so Nana gets weekend visitors too.

At my weekly check-in, I added that as another win. The app helped me put a name to what I'd done. Organising people. Making a plan that actually works. Then practice exams hit. I was wrecked, and my next step didn't happen. I told the app and waited for the guilt trip. It suggested something smaller. Save one nursing course to look at after exams. That, I could do.

When our tennis coach got sick, I helped run the junior session. Twelve kids. I managed. Nobody cried. I logged it as a win, and the app helped me recognise another skill: leading a group. I asked what that might mean for my career options. Nursing still interested me. But now I could see another possibility for later. Leading a nursing team.

Turns out I like getting people organised, too. Sue next door is a charge nurse. The app helped me draft a message asking if I could ask her a few questions about nursing. I checked it and sent it myself. Her first piece of advice? “Get good at nursing first. Managing can come later.” That made sense.

Then I looked at a local care job in the app. It listed first aid as one of the requirements. I didn't have that yet. I tapped “Work on skill” and made a first aid course my next step. That weekend, I was practising CPR on a dummy called Gary. Gary made it. Through Connect, I also found three other tennis players at school. We use nicknames, and messaging has safety checks built in.

Now we play doubles at lunch. I'm the worst. Don't care. Last Wednesday, Nana asked me too. “So, what do you want to do after school?” “Nursing,” I said. “I'd like to start on the wards. And one day, maybe, lead a team.” Nana smiled. “Well, you've been practising on me for two years.” I haven't got my life sorted. The app never promised I would. But this direction feels like mine. I picked it myself.

And for the parents watching: my school provides access, so there's no cost to me. I signed up with a nickname, without giving my real name or email. I choose my goals and agree to my next steps. And when life gets busy, I can take things at my own pace.

What you get

Grows with you, win by win.

Every win counts

A win can be small: helping Dad paint the garage, finishing a busy shift, warming up the younger players. Add what happened and what you did. The AI coach suggests skills it could show. It may suggest a next step too – tap “Use it” if you want it.

School, your way

Tell the AI coach what you like about school and what you don't. Add your grades or upload your report – no judgment, it just helps the AI coach know you better.

Find your people

In Hobbies & people, connect with others from your school who share an interest – for hobbies, sport or side projects. Nicknames only, matched within your age group, and every message is checked by the AI for inappropriate content before it's sent. Automated checks can miss things, so you can report or block anyone. Using it is up to you.

What's holding you back

Time, confidence, money, not knowing where to start – the AI coach names it honestly and helps you find a way around it.

How AI may change this work

Every path explains in plain words how AI may change the work – what's likely to shift and what still needs a person. No score, no guarantees – just reasons you can weigh up.

Your own thing, if you want it

Want your own business one day? Say so under Your answers. Your paths show that route too, Startup guides you step by step and Grants lists funding you could apply for.

Opens up step by step

Four parts, from “Getting to know you” to “Going further”. Get to 70% in one part and the next one opens. Under “What the AI noticed”, see what it's picked up about you – edit or remove anything. Removed something? You can bring it back. No timers.

Win back your time

Set a phone-time goal and see how many hours a week you win back – with a realistic week that still has room for sport, friends and gaming.

Check-ins without judgment

Did your step happen? If life got in the way, fine – the AI coach suggests a new step. What you did since last time counts as a win. Week by Week also helps you ask someone you trust to mentor you.

Healthy body, healthy brain

Moving, sleep, water and decent snacks get their own spot in your week. Bad habits get shortened or swapped, one week at a time – never banned.

Plans can change

Changed your mind? Hit “Plans changed?” on any goal. What you've done still counts, and the rest gets re-planned.

How well you match

Tap “Check how I match” and the jobs it found get an AI estimate: strong match, partial match or early days. Each one shows what you've got and what's missing. Learn a skill and tap “Re-check”. “Refresh results” looks for new jobs when you have enough credits left.

Goals you can see moving

Set goals for your life, this year and the job you want – each broken into milestones with a progress bar.

Your CV, from your own wins

Tap “Create my basic CV” and Week by Week puts it together – only from your wins and what you've actually told it. Found a job you like? Tap “Tailor CV to this job”.

Work on a skill

A job asks for something you haven't shown yet? Tap “Work on skill”. The AI coach suggests ways to learn it, with milestones and a first step for this week. Start it and follow the progress bar on Goals.

Privacy & safety in detail
  • Just a nickname. You don't need your real name or your own email address to join.
  • Your school's dashboard doesn't show what you write. Teachers see that you've joined and how active you are. A teacher's password reset opens your account, and you'll see it in the app.
  • Delete it any time. Your account, your call.
  • Not a counsellor. If things get heavy, the AI coach points you to 1737 and someone you trust.

Questions

Good questions.

Is it free for students?

Yes. Your school pays for Week by Week, so you can use it for free. Ask your careers adviser or teacher for your school's code.

I'm not a student – can I use Week by Week?

Yes. You can sign up on your own, with no school code. Try the free demo first, then pick a plan on the Pricing page. It was built first for students and school leavers, so some questions mention school. More on the page for adults.

Do I have to give my name?

No. To sign up, you pick a nickname, a username and a password, and tell us your age. We don't ask for your real name, your email or your birthday. If you're 13 to 15 and sign up on your own, we also ask for a parent's or caregiver's email, so they can say it's OK.

Can my school read what I write?

Not in the school dashboard. It shows that you've joined and roughly how much you use Week by Week, not what you write. If you're locked out, a teacher can give you a temporary password. It works for 24 hours and opens your account, and you can see the reset in the app.

Not sure which path yet?

That's fine – you don't have to pick one. Your AI coach prefers steps that help several of your paths at once, and says which ones they help. A step for one path can come first when timing matters, like a deadline.

Is the AI coach a real person?

No – it's an AI coach built on Claude. It's honest about that, it asks good questions and it never pretends to know your future. For big decisions it'll encourage you to talk to real people too.

What if I'm not doing OK?

Week by Week isn't a counsellor. If you're struggling, free call or text 1737 any time to talk to a trained counsellor, or call 111 in an emergency. Your school counsellor is there for you too.

Can I answer in another language?

Yes. Write in whatever language feels natural – Week by Week translates it and replies in English.
